Episode 64: Week of October 25th, 2021

Audio Transcript

Hey, it’s what’s happening at Silver Creek Clogging the week of October 25th. I’m Ruth. I’m here at your Silver Creek Clogging dance and movement center in Silverton, Oregon.

It’s the last week of October. Can you believe it?  Woo, time flies when you’re having fun.

And, because it’s the last week of the month, that means we are wrapping up our Tapping into ExcellenceTM leadership focus on loyalty this week. So, yeah, all month long we have been exploring the leadership principle of loyalty, and what it means to be loyal to a person, an idea, or a group. And, we would love to hear from you what new insights you have gained this month, as we’ve been talking about loyalty. We would love to hear if you’ve been noticing any difference in your student’s behavior this month, as we’ve been talking about loyalty.

Yeah, let us know. Let us know what you have noticed and what you have experienced this month, as a result of our conversations about loyalty in classes. And, to kind of finish up our month-long focus on loyalty, I want to share this quote by Stephen Covey.

Stephen Covey said, “Be loyal to those who are not present. In doing so, you build the trust of those who are present.” Deep; that’s a deep one. Remember that; super important.

So, this week in classes, we are going to wear our dance friendly, non-scary Halloween costumes to class. I, of course, am gonna wear one, to help me get into the Halloween spirit and I would love for you to join me. Wear something fun; a little goofy hat, a fun t-shirt, even Halloween socks. Let’s just perk up ourselves, get into the Halloween spirit. It should be fun.

And, along those lines, for Halloween this year, we are inviting you to give the treat of a free two-week intro on us.

So, if you love dancing with us as much as we love dancing with you, then you’re invited to give a two-week intro to someone you think might be a good addition to our studio community.

So, this week, all week long in classes, instructors are going to be handing out little bookmark passes (just little tiny bookmarks) and you can give those out as a treat to somebody that you think might want to join us. You can take as many of those bookmarks as you want, you can give them out to as many people as you want as a special treat to your family and friends this Halloween season.

And, guess what? It’s going to be a kick and a treat all in one. See what I did there? Yeah? Anyway, that’s what we’ll be doing all week in classes this week. So, ask your instructor and your instructor will give you some. But you can always ask for more, if you don’t get as many as you need. Because, we’re going to have these out for Halloween.

So, the Silverton’s farmer’s market. Yay! We have been working on that for so long and it’s finally happening. This winter, we’re going to be to be participating in the Silverton farmers market on one Saturday each month, starting November and ending in May. And, for November, our day that we’re going to be participating is November 6th; just a couple of weeks away, so please put that on your calendar. We’ll be doing little performances throughout the market and so just be prepped if you want to come dance and get in on the fun, that will be super fun. And, we’ll line up all the additional dates very soon and then you can start prepping and planning for those dates that you can join us.

One of our goals for participating in the market this year is to provide our students with an opportunity to raise funds for competition. So, what we’re doing is allowing our students to make crafts to sell at our market booth, as a way to raise money for competition.

So, students, here’s what you should do… start thinking now about what you can make or contribute to the market booth, to sell to raise funds for your competition fees and such, all right?

Also, parents, please help your students brainstorm ideas of things that they can make to sell at the market booth, and instructors will also be talking with students to kind of help them come up with ideas. And, hopefully, by November 6th we’ll have some things that we can display and sell to benefit our students, to help pay their way for competition this this coming competition season. So, that will be really awesome.

So, what’s on the calendar and upcoming events. Of course, next week, wear your dance friendly, non-scary Halloween costume to class.

Saturday, November 6th, as we talked about, we’re gonna perform at the Silverton farmers market; so please make a note of that.

Thanksgiving week, we’re taking a break Wednesday through Saturday that week. Classes will only be Monday and Tuesday the week of Thanksgiving.

And, then, the week of December 12th, wear your ugly/fun/whatever holiday shirt to class. I love dressing up to class, it’s just fun.

Anyway, and then, next year we have some performances. First of all, we have a performance on Saturday, January 22nd. that’s our winter showcase performance. It’s a super relaxed, super laid back, super low-key performance. Who knows, we maybe even this year will be doing it outside. So, just prepare for that and as we have all of the details on location and such, we will let you know.

And then, Saturday, June 4th we will be performing in the theater; this is our theater recital, at the Historic Grand theater in Salem. And, so, we can plan on that venue for that.

And, yeah that’s what’s on the calendar.

Please remember that the Davenport House performance will be coming at some point in the future, and keep all of those dates and all of those events on your calendar.

Please talk with your student about loyalty and let us know. We would love to hear what you’ve learned/what you’ve seen in your student in positive behaviors this month, as a result of our conversations about loyalty in the classroom. And, we will see you in class with Halloween costumes on. Until then, happy dancing.

Audio Transcript

Hey. It’s what’s happening at Silver Creek Clogging the week of October 18th. I’m Ruth, I’m here at your Silver Creek Clogging Dance and Movement Center in Silverton, Oregon.

And, first, we want to start off by saying, “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” to everyone who joined us to celebrate our three-year studio anniversary in this here studio home; right here at your dance and movement center. We had a really fun time. The weather was beautiful. We had lunch, we made tie dyes, and I can’t wait to see how your tie dyes turned out (super excited to see those).

We have a couple of kind of fun announcements to share, but first, a note about loyalty, our Tapping into ExcellenceTM leadership focus for this month. Did you know that, in addition to all of the other aspects we’ve been talking about in regards to loyalty, that loyalty also means expecting the best.

So, one of the most important jobs of an instructor is to help you (our students) do your best. And, if your instructor lets you practice with sloppy technique, or goof off, or be lazy they haven’t helped you to be your best.

And, just a really quick note, loyalty does not mean giving everybody everything they want all the time. Loyalty, as we’ve talked about, is remaining committed – even when things get hard. So, loyalty means expecting the best of you.

So, as a parent of a toddler, a parent would not let their toddler run out into the busy street nor would they let their toddler touch the hot stove. Why? Because those things aren’t good for their toddler. So, they help their toddler to be and do their best by prohibiting them from doing things that are going to harm them.

And, sometimes your instructors or a parent will ask you to do something that may be a little bit hard; and it’s not because they want the worst for you, or they want you to necessarily have to do something hard, it’s because sometimes remaining committed, even when it gets hard, is the very best for your overall growth.

So, you can show loyalty to other people in the same way by expecting the best of them and at Silver Creek Clogging we are committed to helping you be the very best that you can be. That’s why we have this leadership program, that’s why we’ve set up our studio systems the way that we have. It’s because we want you to be the very best that you can be, both on and off the dance floor. That’s how we show our loyalty for you.

So on to the announcements. First, kick or treat. This year for Halloween we are helping you to treat your friends and family to a free two-week introductory program, here at the studio, on us.

So, if you love dancing with us as much as we love dancing with you, we are inviting you to give a treat of a two-week intro, free on us, to your family and friends this Halloween. So, we have some little bookmark passes that we’re going to be handing out next week in classes and you can give those out to your family and friends as a fun treat for Halloween.

And, if you can’t wait and you want your bookmark passes a little bit early, to start handing out early, totally no problem. Just ask your instructor and your instructor will be happy to give you some this week and next week. So, let us know. That’s our treat for you, that you can pass on to your family and friends.

Next up, Silverton farmers market. This is exciting. So, this winter we’re going to be participating in the Silverton farmers market, one Saturday each month starting next month in November and all the way through May. So right away, put Saturday, November 6th on your calendars, to participate in a short performance at the market, and we will announce the additional dates for the winter very soon. But, in the meantime, please put November 6th on your calendars, to join us and perform/put on a little show at the market.

So, one of our goals for participation in the winter market this year is to provide our students an opportunity to raise funds for their participation in competition. So, students who would like to, it’s totally optional and you are invited to, make crafts that you can sell at our booth at the farmers market. And, any proceeds that you make off of those crafts that you sell can be used to pay for your participation in competition.

So, more details on that to come, but in the meantime please start thinking about what you can make to sell at our booth and help you raise funds to participate in competition this coming competition season. Yeah?

Yep, super excited about that. This is our first year actually having a regular booth at the farmers market and it was really important for us to give our students this opportunity/this fundraising opportunity to help you comfortably participate in competition. So, that’s really awesome.

All right, well, here’s what’s on the studio calendar and what’s upcoming. Please keep the following dates and events on your calendars.

Next week, the week of October 25th, wear your non-scary/dance friendly Halloween costumes to class. Fun, fun.

Saturday, November 6th (we just talked about this), this is in a couple weeks actually, it’s the Silverton farmers market performance. So, please put that on your calendars.

And, then, the week of Thanksgiving, that Wednesday through the end of the week, no classes. We will have Monday/Tuesday classes that week, but no classes Wednesday through the end of the week.

And, then, the week of December 12th is wear your ugly holiday shirt to class.

And, then, next year we have a couple of performances: on Saturday, January 22nd is our winter showcase. That is a very informal performance (low-key, super relaxed, super informal), and it should be really fun.

And, then, Saturday, June 4th is our theater/fancy theater recital, that we will have at the Historic Grand in Salem. And, that is on stage – lights, camera, action, and all of that stuff. So, that should be super fun.

Please, also keep in mind that we are still planning to perform at the Davenport House. Once we are kind of out of the woods a little bit more with the COVID, we will continue to work on that one. But, in the meantime, please just keep heads up that we would like to spread a little light for those folks at the Davenport House.

So, yeah, please keep all of those dates and all of those events on your calendars.

Please, chat with your student about loyalty this month. You know, we have, I think in our culture these days, kind of a lack of focus/a lack of commitment in some ways. Where people want to just jump to this thing, to the next thing, to the next thing. And, I think that it’s really important to chat to your student about loyalty and what it means to be committed to a person, or a group, or an idea – even when things get hard. Things don’t always go our way and things will be hard and, in fact, challenges are a part of the growth process. So, I think that’s really important to talk to your student about that and what loyalty means to you. So, take time. We’ll also take time in classes to chat about that this month and, until then, happy dancing.

Episode 62: Week of October 11th, 2021

Audio Transcript

Hey, It’s What’s Happening at Silver Creek Clogging the week of October 11th. I’m Ruth. I’m here at your Silver Creek Clogging Dance and Movement Center in Silverton, Oregon.

Our Tapping into ExcellenceTM leadership focus for the month of October is on loyalty. All of our class chats this month are focused on that topic.

And, one of the important parts of loyalty is that, loyalty is not the same as blind obedience. It is not. Loyalty means doing your best to support the people, the groups, the ideas that you have committed to; so that you can help them do their, and be their, best. Yeah?

So, some thoughts for how you can reinforce that idea for yourself this month is: one, focus on loyalty to the studio by doing your best to practice in a way that would give someone a really positive idea about the studio, if they were to see you acting in that way.

Another thing, to be loyal to a friendship is: to strengthen that friendship by taking some extra time to do some activities or events or just spend some time with that particular friend, so that you can strengthen that friendship a little bit.

Or, some idea about reinforcing this through loyalty to your family is, to do something to serve a family member; like helping with a chore, or expressing your love for them in some way.

So, those are ways that you can express your loyalty for the people, the ideas, or the groups that you’ve committed to; to help them to be their very best.

So, we’ve given you some ideas for how to, kind of, start thinking about that and maybe you’ll have your own idea as well. So, I can’t wait to hear what you’ve done / how you’re deciding to express your loyalty for a group, a person, or an idea that you have committed yourself to.

Here we go… This week, this week (yay!), Saturday is our studio anniversary party. We have been in this studio (well, we will have been, by this Saturday, in the studio) for three years and we’re gonna celebrate.

So, all of the information is in your email. Just a really quick note: this is for students and staff only. This is not a family event, it’s just a student and a staff event. And, all the food and all the materials for all the activities will be provided by Silver Creek Clogging.

You’re going to want to make sure to dress appropriately, because our activities are going to be outside for the most part and we’re going to be making a tie-dye project so, you’re going to want to dress appropriately for both the weather and for the tie-dye project. So, just a heads up on that.

Please, students, this week (if you haven’t already) RSVP to your instructor, to let them know whether you will be attending and we will, then, look forward to seeing everybody on Saturday

What’s coming up on the calendar and studio events? Of course, this Saturday, October 16th is our studio anniversary party.

Next Saturday, October 23rd, tentatively, we have a performance scheduled at the Silverton farmers market. So, please put that on your calendars. We’ll start talking about that in classes this week, as well, to see who can join for that.

And then, the week of October 25th is, wear your non-scary, dance friendly Halloween costume to class. Love it.

The week of Thanksgiving, we have no classes Wednesday through Saturday. Please note, Monday and Tuesday classes will be held that week but, Wednesday, the 24th, through Saturday, the 27th, no classes.

And then, the week of December 12th is, wear your ugly holiday shirt to class. You could even wear some socks or anything else that might seem fun / holiday-ish; that would be really fun.

And then, next year – Saturday, January 22nd is our winter showcase dress rehearsal and recital.

And, Saturday, June 4th is our summer kickoff dress rehearsal and recital.

Just make sure to put those on your calendars and we still have the Davenport House on our calendar.

So, yeah, that’s what to look forward to here at Silver Creek Clogging. We are so grateful that you are part of our studio community, and we’re excited to continue to focus our leadership discussions this month on the topic of loyalty, and we’ll see you in class. Until then, happy dancing.

Episode 61: Week of October 4th, 2021

Audio Transcript

Hey, it’s What’s Happening at Silver Creek Clogging the week of October 4th. I’m Ruth. I’m here at your Silver Creek Clogging Dance and Movement Center in Silverton, Oregon.

It’s October. October came. Whoo, it’s here and, since it’s October, that means our Tapping into ExcellenceTM leadership focus for the month is on loyalty.

Did you know that loyalty means to be dedicated or committed to an idea, a group, or a person? Did you know that? Even when it might be hard. Even when it might be challenging. That’s what loyalty means, it’s being dedicated, even under challenging circumstances. And, as our leadership focus this month, we’re going to be talking about what kind of behaviors are loyal, we’re going to be talking about how a leader can inspire loyalty, and we’re even going to be talking about how being loyal can help our dancers achieve their goals. Yeah?  I’m excited about this. It’s a really good focus for the month, and I’m curious what loyalty means to you, and I would love for you to think about that and chat about that with your student.

Use your drive time to and from the studio this month to chat about loyalty, to describe what kinds of behaviors would indicate loyalty to you, and we will be chatting about it, of course, all month long in classes.

And, I have a little quote here for you. Nicole Yatsonsky said, “Your truest friends are the ones who will stand by you in your darkest moments, because they are willing to brave the shadows with you, and in your greatest moments, because they are not afraid to let you shine.” Oh, that just gives me the chills to say it. So amazing. That is what loyalty is about.

So, our studio anniversary is coming up and we’re going to party. You have all the details in your email, so please check out your email for the time, the place, and what we’re going to do. But, just know it’s going to be fun. We’re going to have food and activities and the only thing you need to bring is yourself and it should be fun.

So, check out your email for all the details and of course you’ll be getting an invitation, special invitation for you, in classes. We’ll start handing those out this week and just note that this is a student / staff event only. So, no family members required or even invited to this one.  This one is just for our students and our staff and it should be fun.

So, what’s on the studio calendar and what’s coming up, yeah. Of course, next Saturday is our studio anniversary party. Keep that on your list.

The week of October 25th we’re gonna wear our non-scary, dance friendly Halloween costumes to class.

And then, the week of Thanksgiving – Wednesday through Saturday during that week of Thanksgiving, no classes. Just a heads up only Monday / Tuesday classes that week.

And then, the week of December 12th is, wear your ugly holiday shirt to class. And, we used to have wear your ugly holiday sweater; but sweaters are just too hot when you’re dancing up a storm, so holiday something.

And then, Saturday, January 22nd is our winter showcase recital.

And, Saturday, June 4th is our summer kickoff recital.

So, please keep all of those dates and all of those events on your calendars.

Know that we are still working on the farmers market and the Davenport House and just keep those, kind of, in the wings and get ready to join us when we have those dates set.

Please remember to chat with your student about loyalty, when you’re driving to and from the studio this month. It’s such an important concept for leaders and learning and growing. These days especially, I think, we have like people jumping ship whenever anything gets hard, and I think it’s really important to remember to be dedicated and committed to something, and to learn how to do that, if you’re going to succeed in life.

So, just remember to chat with your student about that. We’ll be talking in classes about it all month long. Can’t wait to see you in class and, until then, happy dancing.
